Efsaneye göre bundan üç bin yıl önce, eski Mısır Firavunları, Düello Canavarları'na çok benzeyen sihirli bir oyun oynarlardı. Bu eski oyun, geleceği görmeye ve nihayetinde birinin kaderini tayin etmeye yarayan büyülü bir törenide barındırıyordu. Onlar bu oyuna "Gölge Oyunu" diyorlardı. Oyunda, çok fazla sihir, büyü ve vahşi yaratık kullanıldığından, oyunun kontrolden çıkması ve dünyayı yok etme tehlikesi oluşturması çok uzun sürmedi. Ancak, cesur bir Firavun bu duruma müdahale etti ve dünyanın yok oluşunu engelledi.
Yuugi Mutou'nun büyükbabası, ona kimsenin çözemeyeceği eski bir Mısır Yap-Bozu hediye eder ama Yugi parçaları bir araya getirince, hayatı sonsuza kadar değişir. Yap-Boz, Yugi'ye geçmişte kalan bir ruh verir ve ikisi birlikte çalışınca daha güçlü ve kendine daha çok güvenen bir düellocu ortaya çıkar.
Kısa süre sonra, Düello Canavarları adlı kart oyununun gizemli yaratıcısı Pegasus J. Crawford, Yuugi'nin büyükbabasını kaçırır ve Yuugi, Pegasus'un düzenlediği Düello Canavarları turnuvasına katılmak zorunda kalır. Şimdi Yuugi, turnuva boyunca düellolar yapmalı ve büyükbabasını kurtarabilmek için Pegasus'u da yenmelidir.
